Phil Brown decided against retaining the former Sunderland and Leeds forward, but with a year remaining on his Hull City contract could not release him without paying compensation.
Carlisle have announced on their official website that they have "successfully completed transfer and wages negotiations with Hull City and the player" but there are no details on what percentage of the 29-year-old's wages they will contribute. The loan deal will conclude at the end of the season, when Bridges becomes available on a free transfer and could make the move permanent.
After being hampered by injuries, Bridges got his career back on track in his first spell at Carlisle, scoring 12 goals in 23 appearances to help the Cumbrians to the League Two title in 2006. Months later, Phil Parkinson signed him in a £350,000 transfer, from which Hull City have only seen a 3-goal return.
He was loaned out to Sydney FC in Australia in October last year, and has only played once for City since that deal came to an end, making it a total of 11 starts and 13 substitute in all competitions in almost two years with the club.
Meanwhile, Tottenham Hotspur's Anthony Gardner is set to join City on a half-season loan, providing the injury-plagued centre back passes a medical tomorrow. The deal may become permanent in January for a rumoured £2.5million. Striker Marlon King has also agreed personal terms, but his medical can't be conducted until he makes his leaving from current club Wigan amicable.
However, Borussia Dortmund have rejected City's bid for South African left winger Delron Buckley, who has been on trial with City. Brown describes that as "dead in the water" unless the German club lower their asking price.
