The 20-year-old striker scored once in 14 games. He joined in September on a three month loan that allowed Sunderland to recall him at any time and they've done that, although he was due to return next week anyway.
He said of his spell at the KC Stadium: "It was a good move for me, I got some games under my belt but I'm glad to be back."
Clubs cannot make loan signings after today's 5pm deadline until the transfer window re-opens in January. City boss Peter Taylor may look to make sure he has enough in his squad to last 'til then by bringing in another forward.
Such a signing could become all the more important if Ben Burgess's injury turns out to be serious. He limped off in the first half against Southampton on Tuesday after landing awkwardly and injuring the same knee that sidelined him for 12 months. The extent of the injury won't be known until it swells down, but that could be two weeks.
Taylor has ruled out anyone leaving the club, after interest in midfielders Kevin Ellison and Russell Fry.
