Lincoln were having by far the better of the opening exchanges, and Paul Musselwhite had to make a pointblank save from ex-Tiger Gary Fletcher's close-range header.
There was another let off when Richard Butcher headed over from a yard out, and Lincoln were made to pay. Andy Holt played a one-two with Danny Allsopp before smashing the ball past keeper Alan Marriott to steal a half time lead for City.
The lead was consolodated 7 minutes into the second half when Allsopp latched onto a ball over the top, and fired home his 8th of the season to make it 2-0.
City had improved significantly in the second half, and the win was sealed by Stuart Green with 11 minutes to go. The visitors were caught on the counter attack, and Allsopp passed to Green who beat Marriott in the one-on-one.
City line-up (4-4-2): Musselwhite; Thelwell, Whittle, Delaney, Dawson; Price (France), Ashbee, Green, Holt; Allsopp (Webb), Burgess (Hinds).
