He said: "He is a young lad who is a good player, another lad we have earmarked."
But that will not deter Peter Taylor - a former Gills boss himself - and he remains hopeful of capturing the young defender.
"Alton is a player I've watched develop and I think he'd do a good job for us. He's strong and physical but he's also very confident on the ball.
"I'm hoping to speak to him at some stage this week and see what his plans are. Obviously, he's looking for a new club after being released by Spurs and hopefully he will see his future with us."
