City Ride Their Luck To Win
Last updated : 22 October 2005 By Andy Beill
Peter Taylor made a big decision by not including Nick Barmby in his squad for the game versus Derby, but his plan seemed to be working as City started well. Ben Burgess had a header cleared off the line, before the opening goal came from a great team move. Curtis Woodhouse intercepted the ball to play it to Ryan France wide right. He played it in to Chris Brown who passed it on to Stuart Elliott, and he buried it into the corner with a first time shot to end his goal drought.
Derby finished the half strongly though and were unlucky not to go in level at the break, with Stern John's shot that hit the crossbar the closest they came to equalising.
John found the net 8 minutes into the second half, but his header was disallowed for a foul on Damien Delaney.
The warning signs were there, and when Leon Cort brought down Seth Johnson in the box minutes later, Idiakez drew level for Derby County with the penalty.
There only looked like being one team who could win it as the Rams continued to dominate, but against the run of play City stole a late goal. Chris Brown was brought down by Hall for a clearcut penalty, and substitute Stuart Green put it into the bottom corner.
The visitors had another goal disallowed in the 86th minute. Cort was challenged unfairly by Davies as he headed in, and the Derby player was sent off for protesting his innocence.
John had the last chance for an equaliser but shot well over. They looked like they would have won this match, but threw it all away in the last seven minutes and go home to Derby with nothing.
