Defenders Get The Chop

Defensive pair Greg Strong and Andy Holt have both been told they are surplus to requirements.

The duo are currently out on loan - to Scunthorpe and Shrewsbury respectively - and their services will not be required when they return. They are still under contract beyond the end of this season, but could have them paid up if no offers come in.

Chairman Adam Pearson revealed they are amongst "five or six" that will be released in the summer.

He said: "We're looking to run a squad of 20 senior professionals, along with four younger players.
"Peter [Taylor] is happy with that and he feels it's a system which will work really well. Basically, we're planning to have two players to compete for each position in the side."

Meanwhile, defender Jon Otsemobor's Hull City future is uncertain. He has played the last game of his loan spell here and so returns to Anfield.

Taylor said: "Jon is hoping to be awarded a new contract by Liverpool. If that doesn't happen, he's indicated he wants to train with them to try and earn a new deal."
"I understand there is already strong interest from several First and Second Division clubs much closer to Liverpool.
"I'm sure Liverpool would be happy to let Jon stay with us on loan until the end of the season but the lad is thinking along different lines.
"There's a chance it might still go in our favour but at the end of the day you have got to be realistic."
