The North Ferriby-born defender came through the youth ranks at City and made his debut over 5 years ago, making him the longest serving player at the club.
However, Peter Taylor sees no future for the 22-year-old at the Kingston Communications Stadium and his contract has been paid off, despite having over a year left on it.
Captain Justin Whittle is now the longest serving player - other than Alan Fettis if you include his first spell at the club - after joining in November 1998.
Edwards scored 8 goals in over 200 games for his home-town side, although only 6 of those appearances were made this season. An ankle injury sustained at Kidderminster in October left him out of action 'til the new year, and since Taylor's appointment as manager he has been unable to make his way back into the first team.
Elsewhere, a bid from Barnsley to take goalkeeper Paul Musselwhite on loan has been turned down, while fellow 'keeper Alan Fettis has been called up to the Northern Ireland squad.
