City boss Nigel Pearson told BBC Radio Humberside: "He's going to be out for three to four weeks.
"It's a similar injury to the one he had before, not as serious as before but very frustrating for us."
On-loan Aston Villa keeper Brad Guzan will carry on in goal with Pearson adding: "The timescale is probably going to coincide with Brad's stay but we'll just have to monitor the situation and see how it goes.
"He's had such a steady build-up of getting back in the side, he's trained really well and it's frustrating for the lad."
The Italy Under-21 international initially signed on loan with the Championship club in October, making seven appearances before picking up a thigh injury in the 1-1 draw with Reading on 28 December.
