Killies boss Jim Jeffries wanted the player if he could prove his fitness, but as he continues to struggle with a calf injury, he will now turn his attention elsewhere.
Peter Taylor revealed: "John is still injured and obviously it couldn't have come at a worse time for him. We've not heard anything more from Kilmarnock and it appears it's fallen through."
Calf injuries are rampant in the Hull City squad recently with Shaun Smith also out, but Justin Whittle should be fit to play in this evening's reserve match with Sheffield Wednesday, while Jason Price is hopeful of being fit for Saturday's all-ticket home game against York City.
Elsewhere, Taylor is waiting to hear from Cambridge if they want to sign loan duo Daniel Webb and Nathan Peat on a permanent basis, while Clayton Donaldson may be set for a loan move to Harrogate Town.
