Ricketts joined City from Swansea for £300,000 and made 129 appearances in three years.
The move leaves Phil Brown with only Nathan Doyle and Bernard Mendy available at right-back.
Ryan France, who also played that position before and was released earlier this summer, has joined Sheffield United after being on trial at rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
