The Third Place #4

Last updated : 25 August 2003 By Andy Beill
Boston United 1-0 Carlisle United (attendance: 2,527)
Carlisle are the only side still without a point to their name this season in Division 3. Neil Redfearn made sure their poor start continued, firing past Matt Glennon with a 20-yard shot after half an hour. Carlisle were well beaten, and with Lee Maddison sent off in the second half it ended up being another miserable day for the Cumbrians.

Bristol Rovers 2-2 Macclesfield Town (attendance: 7,064)
John Miles gave the Silkmen the lead after just 2 minutes with a free kick, and Rovers' Ijah Anderson (15th minute) fired past his own keeper to make it 2-0. Paul Tait pulled one back after half an hour, then set up Robert Quinn four minutes later to equalise for the home side and save their unbeaten record.

Bury 2-1 Lincoln City (attendance: 2,576)
Gary Fletcher scored his first goal since signing for Lincoln 25 minutes into today's match, and had further chances to consolidate their lead. But Bury defender Lee Unsworth headed home a corner with nine minutes to go, and they then got the winner in stoppage time courtesy of a controversial penalty. Ben Futcher was adjudged to have handled, and Shakers player-manager Andy Preece scored from the penalty spot to bag 3 points for his side.

Cambridge United 0-2 Hull City (attendance: 4,571)
Peter Taylor's side ended their poor away form with a convincing win at the Abbey Stadium. Winger Jason Price (5) got his head on the ball to give the Tigers an early lead, and Danny Allsopp (21) got his fourth of the season to make it 2-0. Allsopp has scored in every league game since signing from Notts County and Cambridge were made to pay. Damien Delaney cleared off the line with 10 minutes to go to deny Dave Kitson with their best chance, but the U's were never really in the game.

Cheltenham Town 2-1 Kidderminster Harriers (attendance: 4,179)
Danny Williams put the visitors ahead early in the second half with a free kick, and they had chances to add to their lead. However, after Cheltenham forward Bob Taylor was denied his first for the club, Jamie Victory (79) got a rebound and Grant McCann (81) scored a free kick to give Town the win. Harriers had Adam Willis sent off late on as they went home with nothing.

Darlington 2-1 Leyton Orient (attendance: 4,660)
After losing their first three games of the season, less than 5,000 were at the Reynolds Arena to see the Quakers win their first of the campaign. After Orient forward Lee Thorpe made it two goals in successive games with an overhead kick just before the hour mark, Darlo left it late to claim the win. 10 minutes from time, Matthew Clark headed home the equaliser, and then Chris Hughes got the winner in the final minute.

Doncaster Rovers 1-1 Huddersfield Town (attendance: 7,367)
The biggest crowd of the day was at Belle Vue, and they saw the visitors go in front after just seven minutes through Andy Booth. But Leo Fortune-West scored his fourth goal in Rovers colours, heading in Jamie Patterson's cross just after half time. Huddersfield had substitute Danny Schofield sent off in stoppage time after just 21 minutes on the pitch.

Oxford United 3-0 Swansea City (attendance: 6,725)
Swansea had won their first three games of the season, but were brought back down to Earth late on at the Kassam Stadium. Andy Crosby scored a penalty for Oxford five minutes from time, and Julian Alsop and Mark Rawle added to the lead in the closing stages. Oxford now replace Swansea at the top of the table.

Torquay United 1-3 Rochdale (attendance: 3,003)
Rochdale had Michael Simpkins sent off just before half time for two yellow cards, but they still took the lead thanks to Lee McEvilly's 59th minute penalty. Torquay looked to have no hope when Robert Betts made it 2-0 and Gulls midfielder Matt Hockley was sent off. However, David Graham gave them a lifeline by converting a cross with 15 minutes to go. But their prospects were gone when Betts scored his second three minutes later to ensure 3 points for the away side.

Yeovil Town 0-2 Northampton Town (attendance: 6,105)
After Yeovil's promising start to the season, they've now lost their last two as Northampton get their own season on track. Paul Reid got on the end of a corner after 5 minutes, and summer buy Josh Low doubled the Cobblers' lead before half time.
