The Tigers are only four points behind sixth-placed Nottingham Forest but the former England midfielder is refusing to get carried away.
"We're an outsider," Barmby told the Hull Daily Mail. "Even if we win the next eight games, we'll still be relying on other teams losing.
"But other teams are going to lose games, we know that so we just have to keep going. When you're up there towards the end of the season, that pressure can really show.
"In this division history shows there's always a team that comes from the back of the pack, and at the minute there's quite a few teams who think they could do that.
"As long as you're in the hat in April, you've got a chance."
