Saturday 13th December, 2003, was the last meeting between the two sides at Glanford Park. Peter Beagrie gave the Iron the lead from the penalty spot after Steve MacLean fell under a challenge from Damien Delaney, before Stuart Elliott equalised, and the match finished 1-1. The return fixture at the KC Stadium in March ended in a 2-1 win for City, with Ben Burgess scoring twice. The Tigers ended the season as Division Three runners-up, before promotion again the following year, and then finished 18th in the Championship last season. Scunthorpe ended the 2003/04 season 3rd from bottom, but turned it around the following season by getting promotion. They finished mid-table in League One last season.

Hull City Line-Up
Paul Musselwhite - 'Mussy' played just once more for City after this match, and was released at the end of the season... to join Scunthorpe. He played 82 games in 2 seasons, and has recently left them to join Conference South side Eastleigh. He made his debut in a friendly against Southampton on Saturday.
Richard Hinds - The defender featured regularly for the rest of the season, but was only selected 6 times in 2004/05. He spent part of that season on loan at Scunthorpe, who he then joined on a free transfer in the summer. He was a mainstay in the Iron's side last season, playing 47 times in all competitions.
Marc Joseph - Missed just one game before the end of the season, and again featured in the 2004/05 promotion campaign. However, he made just one appearance for City in the Championship - the first of those ending early as he got sent off - and went on loan to Bristol City in November, before joining Blackpool on a free transfer in January.
Damien Delaney - Gave away the controversial penalty in this match, but was everpresent for City in the 2003/04 season, and was awarded with the Player of the Year title. He's barely missed a game since either, and has signed a long-term contract with the club.
Andy Dawson - Having joined City from Scunthorpe in the summer, the left-back played an integral role in helping City to promotion. He faced competition for his place from the now departed Roland Edge before an injury-hit 2005/06 season, but now looks set to reclaim his first team place.
Jason Price - Came under pressure from Ryan France for the right wing place, and looked to be out of the picture before a brief revival in December 2005. He had re-established himself in the team, but Peter Taylor wouldn't give him long-term security so he joined Doncaster Rovers in a £25,000 deal, where he has enjoyed success so far.
Ian Ashbee - Captained City to two promotions and was playing a key role as City entered the Championship, before a knee injury ruled him out for the season. Starting to come back to fitness now, but unlikely to figure in this or any of the other pre-season friendlies.
Dean Keates - The following week's game against Mansfield was his last for the club, leaving two months later to sign for Kidderminster on a free transfer. He made over 50 appearances for them in all competitions before being released and signing for Lincoln City. He lasted just a few months at Sincil Bank before returning to hometown club Walsall in January, where he has enjoyed the captaincy.
Andy Holt - Was a useful squad player in helping City gain promotion from Division Three, but was allowed to leave for Wrexham at the end of the season on a free transfer. He found first team football at the Racecourse Ground, playing 81 league games in two years, but has recently moved on to Northampton Town on a free transfer.
Ben Burgess - His 18 goals made him City's top scorer in 2003/04, but three games from the end of the season he broke his leg, ruling him out for all but the last two games of the 2004/05 season. He scored a couple of important goals in the opening months of the 2005/06 season, before injury again ruled him out for the season. Back in action now, but still building up fitness and match practice.
Stuart Elliott - Scored one of his 14 goals of 2003/04 in this match at Scunthorpe, before firing in 29 goals to take City to promotion again a year later. Had a difficult first season in the Championship but still managed to finish as City's top scorer, albeit with only 7 goals, and will be hoping to do better this term.
Substitutes | |||
Stuart Green - Came on as a substitute after being surprisingly left out of the starting line-up. He played a key role in helping City to promotion, but has been in and out of the side over the last two years. He looked to be finding good form at the end of last season, but could find a first team place hard to come by now and has been made available for transfer.
Ryan France - Had only started one game prior to this as he eased his way into league football, and came on as a substitute. He continued to play a squad role, before becoming established in the first team over the last two years. This could be a big year for him as he could find it difficult to make either the right wing or right back place his own, and is already behind his teammates as he is yet to make a pre-season appearance yet. That could change tomorrow as he is expected to make his comeback on the South Bank.
Boaz Myhill - Only joined the club two days before this game and spent it on the bench, but soon established himself as the club's number 1. Has now made 118 appearances for City, and was last season's Player of the Year.
Justin Whittle - Having been a mainstay of the team, he was finding himself on the bench more frequently, and only played twice before being released at the end of the season. He's now going into his third year at Humberside neighbours Grimsby Town, who he joined after leaving City.
Steve Melton - Wasn't featuring for City, and one substitute appearance in February preceded a free transfer move to Boston United a month later. He only made 14 starts for the Pilgrims due to injury problems and was released this summer. He's recently been on trial with their neighbours Lincoln City. |
