Carlisle United boss Roddy Collins has gone on record as saying that the Cumbrians will not be relegated but United will have to play better than this if that is to be true.

Disappointed Collins said "We were poor right from the kick off. May be it's a hangover from Tuesday night when we played well and looked solid.

"I thought this might be a banker I'm very disappointed with a lot of the players. They just didn't cope. So many of the players were switched off, I feel terribly let down." Hull hadn't won in seven games but put an end to that run in some style as their strikers rediscovered the art of goal scoring.

Carlisle could do little about the first goal, a piece of skill from debut boy Jonathan Walters saw him turn on a sixpence and fire in a dipping shot from 20 yards.

But the defence had no excuses for the second. Stuart Elliott was allowed the freedom of Brunton Park and he was unmarked to head home Richie Appleby's cross.

Hull made it three before the break when man-of-the-match Walters turned Paul Raven and beat the offside trap to send Jamie Forrester through to net the third.

Collins rang the changes at half time bringing on Will McDonagh and Jon McCarthy in place of Mark Birch and Brendan McGill, but it didn't stop Hull adding a fourth within minutes of the restart.

Walters picked out Forrester and Glennon did well to keep the shot out but it fell to Elliott who finished from twelve yards.

Walters collected Marc Joseph's clearance on the half way line and raced through to score the Tigers fifth.

It could have been worse for Carlisle but Lawrie Dudfield hit the post and Glennon was at his best finger tipping over from Daniel Webb.

Adam Rundle and Richie Foran came close for Carlisle and Craig Farrell finally got a consolation goal with a free kick in the last minute.

Delighted Tigers boss Peter Taylor said: "My team are an honest bunch and they worked hard and were rewarded today. The ball ran for us and we killed off the opposition I couldn't be happier for the lads."
